[Cam] Where Does This Rumor Come From?
22nd-Feb-2010 04:42 pm
surreal
So, there's a rumor. I've heard it in various incarnations, but I've now actually heard it from a real out-of-towner, although he was vague on where he had heard it from.

The Sonoma domain kills out-of-towners.

I'd really like to know how this got started and why it's going around. No, really. I'm interested in addressing this in a reasonable, adult manner, because if this is an actual, honest-to-god rumor that is being spread, it needs to be addressed.

So, have you heard this before? From where/whom did you hear it? Do you have any evidence that substantiates said rumor?

Thanks,

Roo

I have not heard this rumor.

Standoffish and xenophobic, I'll grant you. We have a well deserved reputation for both of those things, but it's a reputation that we are working on repairing. Killing out of town characters? Bizarre.

Maybe its a case of telephone?

After all, we became standoffish and xenophobic because out-of-towners would frequently come and kill US.

Perhaps in the retelling, the position of the killer and killee was mixed up.

Or, it is simply our enemies spreading their vile propaganda against us.

I personally believe its a case of telephone mixing things up and blowing them out of proportion. I think IC paranoia and suspicion are mostly at fault with this and the ic stuff is limited to a few characters or smaller groups rather than the game as a whole or multiple venues as a whole. I've been talking with Jon Grimmer about repairing issues like this so there isn't any need to worry over it.

I am certain it was not your intent to sound condescending. However, what you have essentially just implied is that my interest in addressing this is useless. I don't believe it is.

As one of the few members of UnSun that takes an active interest in the global chronicle, such a reputation is concerning to me. We have a very different player base than we used to have, and the few folks we've had come in from out of town recently have been cautiously welcomed and greeted well. It's been a pleasure to have them, they seem to have enjoyed themselves, and it's something that we would like to see continue.

Sorry Roo I didn't mean to come off that way. I am at work and typing in between work stuff so I totally botched my attempt. My apologies.

Kill out of towners? No.

But shut out, ignore and xenophobic is what I have personally seen.

I will explain more when I have the time.

Myself and Vern are working to fix that. It's going to take time and open minds though.

Have you thought about having a round table discussion about this? I realize that by suggesting it, I'm volunteering myself to lead it, which, upon further consideration, I'd actually be happy to do. I have an interest in the topic, a desire to see our domain shed our rather unfortunate reputation, the ability to be emotionally detached from the situation, and I can keep a bunch of gamers focused and on topic.

The idea is solid and you're willing to volunteer which kicks ass. I would like the opportunity to talk to a couple of people individually before we get into that sort of discussion though. I tend to be better with a little one-on-one prep time with some people before we get into a large discussion.

The problem doesn't rest squarely on the shoulders of the general membership. VST's also need to be on the job on this as well, because it is one thing when players ignore the visitors, but another when the VST has plot that has all of the local players tied up with nothing for the visitors to do except wait on their butts. (this has happened on multiple times)

When was the last time you came to a Requiem (or any other) game in Sonoma?
24th-Feb-2010 02:03 am (UTC)
Spring (?) of last year, the featured game, now that may have been a SF game, but we have a 6 hour drive to your neck of the woods. Cam/Anarch was a good game to travel to, but when Requiem hit, it became *a lot* harder to interact with anyone outside of any loose ties you made before hand. I am not trying to place blame or anything, but my goal is to help highlight problems that visitors have when going to a Sonoma game.
Requiem has been very difficult to travel with, so there are just inherent problems with the game, but everyone has had to bend over backwards to try to make this game playable.

The Sonoma game wasn't hosting or doing any storytelling that game, however I totally understand that fear as a player who has traveled a long way to try and enjoy a game before only to find that I was bored off of my ass the entire night for the same reason. Thankfully we haven't seen that issue with the recent visitors we've been getting and we have made damn sure they are included in everything we do so they enjoy the game as much as we do.

And I thoroughly agree with the inherent trouble of Requiem. Hopefully the relaunch of Masquerade should resolve that, at least that will be two games with more of a global style and continuity (Mage being the other).

I would like to hear your explanation. I know the reasons behind why the domain has its (well-deserved) reputation. Perhaps you would be able to suggest ways to improve it?
